A Legacy of Learning

The first school was built within the Borough of McVeytown shortly after the School Law of 1834 was passed providing for the support of schools by taxation. An octagonal building was used until 1844, at which point the school directors called a public meeting to discuss the need for a larger building. There were then 150 children in the borough between the ages of five and fifteen, and the former school house could no longer accommodate them. In 1845, the new building opened with a feature in the VILLAGE HERALD:

“The New Brick Academy on Queen Street… is divided into two rooms (on each story), making four school rooms 25’ x 28’; besides a Library Room of good size on the second floor… It is by much, the best edifice of the kind in the county.”

The Academy would eventually transition into the McVeytown Elementary School and until its closure be the oldest public school building in use in Mifflin County.

Today, the building houses the McVeytown Borough Office and Rothrock Community Library, in continuation of its educational legacy.
